Birthday Piñata

We used to buy piñata but when the “design demand” is getting crazy I thought we could make one of our own (more fun and economical too). Last year we made a rectangular Minecraft Creeper and this time it's a round-shaped soccer ball!

Started with the most interesting part - making a balloon ball and “paper mache” it to solidify the round shape:

  1. Buy punch balloons

  2. Get some newspaper from restaurant😁

  3. Tape two ends flat

  4. Make flour paste

  5. Cut and glue the newspaper strips to the balloon with flour paste (thick & layered evenly). Set the ball on a good size of bowl. Much easier to work with.

  6. Let air dry overnight

Next exciting part is to “pop” the ballon! Make sure you turn on the sound when watching the video😂 My boys are super excited!

Note that one side gets deflated due to unevenly layered… lesson learned.

Important to cut out a kid-palm sized hole where you poke/pop the ballon. Keep the cut-out piece as a lid to seal later.

Now we want to work on the cosmetics by putting on these white crepe paper streamers around the ball:

  1. Simply multi-fold them in a certain length and cut them halfway in the same width.

  2. And then add/glue the cut-out soccer patterns on the ball (shapes and strips).

  3. Leave the top hole open for filling the candy later.

Optional to make another small hole on the opposite site of previous cut-out hole for some decorations —> leaf ribbons (or seaweed👀).

After I stuffed the strings in, the ends are quite secure so I didn’t bother to make knots inside the ball.

Special candy finally arrived and boys are happy to finish this important job by putting them all in.

Final work is to put the “lid” back on and seal the hole. Those party glasses might be fancy/alternative options for the eye masks (covered with crepe paper streamer too).

Last year the rectangular looking Minecraft Creeper. (All you need is a decent sized box from HEB😎)
